Ugni Blanc is a grape that is widespread in southern France and particularly in the southern Rhone and through to coastal Provence.In many other countries, this widely planted grape is known as Trebbiano. It probably originated in Italy and was brought to France when the pope decamped to Avignon. According to Jancis Robnson, at the end of the 1980s there was five times more Ugni Blanc planted in France than there was Chardonnay.Of course, those of you who like sipping a Cognac or an Armagnac will already know that Ugni Blanc is the main grape used in their production. In the Cognac producing areas Ugni Blanc is often known as St .Emilion after the wine producing region of Bordeaux.Despite its widespread planting in France, it is rarely used as the major component of a blend, with winemakers preferring to use its acidity to bolster other varieties such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Semillon.
