Le 7 is Sophie Pic's informal restaurant serving dishes from along the length of the A7 highway that runs close to the restaurant in Valence. The food sometimes looks simple but that conclusion belies the work that goes into each dish. The restaurant has a nice 'feel' to it when you walk in. The staff are responsive and courteous. Large red plastic chairs are comfortable. The room responds to the large round light fittings, reflecting light onto the compound, slate-like black table tops. Serviettes are on hooks at the table side.A small place of roasted nuts (very fresh) are placed on the table along with a small amuse bouche in a ceramic spoon. First courses on the 28 Euro menu were a dish asparagus spears and a jamon custard with endive. Both were flavoursome but without much in the way of textural contrast. For main courses we tried the line caught pollack with a horseradish (raifort) foam and a beetroot 'fondant'. This fish had a somewhat glassy texture but the flavour was good. The beetroot fondant was exceptional. Our other dish was the daily special of roast chicken with a tarragon butter sauce and a very good puree of potatoes.A rhum baba for dessert was very good, served on a bed of vanilla cream. The wine list can best be described as solid and safe. No heady natural wines here. Rather, they tend towards the wines of the Rhone and Burgundy with names like Bouchard, Alary, Perrin and Ramonet prominent on the list.We had some crisp biscuits and good coffee before heading for the A7 and onwards towards our destination of Caromb.
