Les Pipos is a current favourite haunt of ours in Paris due to the delicious food, the laid back atmosphere and the very smart selection of wines.
It is the type of place that you might walk past without a second glance because it looks like any other corner wine bar with its custom mainly coming from devoted locals. However if you look closer you will notice that the oysters are supplied by gold medal oyster producer Jean d'Cancale. If you peruse the wine list you will notice some very smart wines from some of the best producers in France including Morgon producer Jean Foillard (they have the Cote du Py), the Minervois jewels from Jean-Baptiste Senat and the Cote du Rhone from organic star Catherine le Goeuil.
Our dishes included a dozen of the wonderful oysters, a mound of rillettes of goose, a great, rustic beef tartare and a comforting dish of petite sale on a bed of lentils. This is great comfort food served in convivial surroundings. We also like the policy of making many of the wines available in 400 ml containers, rather than having to commit to a full bottle.
Of course it is also important to realise that you can drop in here at any time in the morning for a cup of coffee which is quite reasonable by Paris standards. On our latest visit we noticed that they were serving a couple of our favourite wines - the Domaine Saint Nicolas Les Clous and the Henri Milan Sans Soufre Ajoute Rouge by the glass.
