The Coal Valley Vineyard is a small, but significant, producer in the lower part of the Coal Valley. Todd Goebel and Gillian Christian have a pleasant cellar door outlet and a lovely restaurant which is currently being run as a function centre by the people from Smolt in Salamanca Square.Look for their lightly oaked Chardonnay, the Riesling and the elegant Pinot Noir. They also produce a Tempranillo, a Cabernet Merlot and a sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir. We were impressed with the 2007 Riesling which had great structure and length but were really impressed with their recent Old Block Pinot Noir which exhibits a French-like earthiness with fungal aromas and a soft, silky, fine-tannin finish.
