This is a must-visit institution simply because it exists. Locals and tourists flock here to experience indifferent coffee, chaotic surroundings, variable service and massive piles of food.Large breakfasts are an institution in the United States. Every city dweller has their favourite breakfast place where you can usually eat a lot, but you leave wondering why you subjected yourself to such an enormous amount of indifferently cooked food. Well Carnegie Delicatessen is better than most. We have now gone here on three different visits to New York - mainly to experience the atmosphere, but we have to admit to having a soft spot for the pastrami on rye and the giant knishes. The pastrami on rye is a justifiably famous sandwich that will take you a long time to eat. Layer on layer on layer of pastrami bulges from the quite good rye bread. But make sure that your appetite is hearty. The knish is a filled pastry of Russian or Polish peasant origin (depending on who you talk to). The European name is k'nysz. At the Carnegie Deli they fill the pastry with either potato, kasha or their own cured meats (corned beef and pastrami). Once again it is a massive serve but quite a lovely flavour and texture. They are certainly a bargain at under $US5.The menu here is very extensive and you can eat here for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or supper. There is something to appeal to most tastes on the very large menu.
