We first got to love the Prince Wine Store when it opened in St Kilda. We used to enjoy heading down the stairs to the cellar and selecting a hard-to-find European wine or a wine from a cult Australian producer. We also loved the passion of the owners who really wanted to communicate their enthusiasm for wine to their customers. As business blossomed the premises were no longer big enough to house the amazing collection so they moved to nearby South Melbourne. This store is now an essential stop on our trips to Melbourne. We always want to check out the latest finds from France or Italy or Spain - they seem to have an uncanny knack of finding emerging producers. This is one of the few places where you can buy Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee champagne, for example. The list of wines from Burgundy is extensive, as is the range of Pinots from Australia and New Zealand. Their Rhone offering includes wines from Beaucastel, Clape, l'Oratoire Saint Martin, Perrin, Sabon and Vieux Telegraphe among others. From Italy you will find such venerable producers as Fonterutoli, Gaja and Antinori. They sell top end dessert wines like d'Yquem, but round out their offering with the lovely Kracher wines from Austria and both Durban and Richards Muscat de Beaumes de Venise vintages and the smart Telmo Rodriguez MR Moscatel. There is also a smaller outlet in the original location of 2A Acland Street, St Kilda.
