Choga is a pleasant, small, Korean restaurant in the centre of Sandy Bay serving tasty food craved by students from the nearby University. It is named after the traditional Korean houses with straw-thatched roofs.
The quality of the food is very high and the quality of the cooking equally so.
Three side plates (banchan) appear quickly. These are buk (water chestnut jelly) with a soy sauce, the famous kim chi and a bean shoot salad.
We love the buchimgae, a Korean style pancake served with soy sauce on the side. It is as large as a pizza but incredibly light (think okonomiyaki from Japan without the benito flakes) and is a tangle of bean shoots, finely sliced vegetables, squid pieces and dried shrimp.
They also do a great bi-bim-bap, which is one of our favourite comfort foods. A bowl of rice is brought to the table along with a platter of attractively presented side dishes such as pickled cucumber, meat, fried egg, shredded carrot, shredded lettuce and spinach. You then add these to the rice, top it with some chilli sauce and stir it all up to blend the flavours and textures. In winter you can get a hot version of this dish as well. The advantage here is that the hot rice forms a crust against the side of the serving dish making a wonderful end to the meal similar to that of a properly-cooked Spanish paella.
Another dish we like is the Yook gae jang, a hearty beef and chilli soup that is ideal for the chilly winter days in Hobart. This is served in a large bowl and the flavour is deep, complex and satisfying.
