One of the most visually stunning restaurants we have ever visited. Sitting atop the venerable Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, you reach this restaurant via a special lift to the left of reception.
A visit here is like a visit to the theatre - the difference is that you, the waiters and the food are the actors. Watch out! Philippe Starck has been here.
Marble tables, square glass plates, flashing lights, designer customers and stunning views set this restaurant apart. It is a pity that the food is not quite as outstanding.
Three white crispy bread rolls started the theatre experience. You tackle the food with long thin knives and forks designed for their appearance rather than their practicality. Pepper and salt shakers also by Philippe Starck lay flat on the table.
Cold curried asparagus soup with black sesame seeds and blue crab relish had excellent flavour. There was also a dash of chilli sauce feathered through the soup. Gingered half moon scallops with ravioli, water chestnuts and tomato and basil concasse was a good concept. The texture was good but the flavour 'hit' was minimal.
There was lots of centre height in evidence in a dish of citrus grilled wild salmon served on a bed of mash and topped with batons of cucumber and sprinkling of ume. Grilled tofu with curried eggplant, wild mushrooms and red pepper coulis accompanied by beautiful, thin eggplant chips was a refreshing change from many of the boring vegetarian dishes available in hotel restaurants.
Overall the experience was good and the food reasonable. But why quibble when you are in one of the world's great hotels, in one of the world's great cities looking at one of the world's greatest views!
