When foodies arrive in Tasmania, the first place they head for is the Wursthaus Kitchen just off Hobart's Salamanca Place. It is a showcase for the best of the state's produce and for the value-added products produced both on the premises and at the Wursthaus production facility at Cambridge.
The range of pre-prepared dishes is impressive. In winter you will find cassoulet, lamb shanks, Turkish lamb or osso bucco. Simply take them home and put them in the oven. They also sell filled bread rolls and sandwiches for the lunch trade.
You will also find a wide range of Tasmania's and Europe's best wines, as well as local, interstate and overseas food products. You will be able to buy Pyengana cheese or the well-known Heidi gruyere, for example. Or you will find local saffron, Woodbridge Smokehouse smoked ocean trout, Pirates Bay pickled octopus, Ashbolt olive oil and much more.
There is also a good fresh meat section where you can buy Cape Grim beef, Flinders Island lamb (the meat benefits from the high quantity of salt in the pastures here), Huon Valley Berkshires pork products (we particularly enjoy cooking the pork shoulders from this producer), Nicholls chickens, excellent long-aged beef, fresh Rannoch quail and their long-famous range of freshly-made sausages. The smoked eel from the Wursthaus is also an excellent product.
Among the local wine selection you will find hard-to-get labels such as Unavale from Flinders Island and the wonderful d’Meure's wines from Birchs Bay as well as Apsley Gorge Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and Frogmore Creek wines which are among Tasmania's best.
But it is not only Tasmanian products that are available. They also stock a good range of pastas, rice, olive oils, couscous and vinegars from Europe.
If you are into chocolates then the offerings from local maker The Cat's Tongue Chocolatiers are beautiful and the range from Koko Black in Melbourne are equally tempting. They also stock Nostimo handmade pasta which is a very good product. We also shop here for the good quality Chandler and Franquette walnuts.
Wursthaus Kitchen is a must visit establishment.
Disclaimer: The Wursthaus also sells French wines we are importing into Australia: http://www.livingwines.com.au
