The Terredora Fiano di Avellino is a white wine from southern Italy that is an excellent example of what this grape type can deliver when it is made with skill and care.
Terredora is one of the new breed of wineries (based in Montefusco) who are turning Campania into one of the most sought after wine regions in the world. (Some would argue that it is simply being restored to its rightful place.)
The elegant label promises much and the wine delivers. It is dry, clean and lively with stacks of fruit and a very long lingering impact on the palate.
The Terredora vineyard was set up when Walter Matroberardino left the family wine making concern and set up his own vineyard. Altogether hw now controls over 150 hectares of vineyards in the Avellino region.
Fiano is an ancient Greek grape that was brought to Campania by the waves of Greek migrants who settled here over 2000 years ago. By the end of the Second World War, however, the grape had nearly disappeared from the region. A huge effort was put into reviing the variety and now it takes its place at the head of the white varieties of the region.
The vineyards for the Fiano are near the village of Lapio and are tended by Lucio, the son of the founder of the winery.
This well-structured wine is a perfect example of how this grape should be treated and is one that should be sought out by all serious wine lovers.
