La Cave de l'Os a Moëlle is the baby sister of the deservedly popular l'Os a Moëlle just over the road. It is the type of place where you can drop in to share a bottle of wine with friends or you can call in for a delightful meal served family style at shared tables. The food is set out for you to choose as you wish and the price is very reasonable.
The tables hold about eight people so you will be asked to share your table and your food with strangers. But you won't be strangers for long because it is the type of place that invites discussion - particularly about food.
When we sat down the table was already groaning under the weight of plates of beetroot, celeriac remoulade, pasta, some excellent blood terrine, tomato salad, various vegetable dishes and a generous basket of bread. To the side there is a soup tureen with a fine mussel variety on the night we visited. There will then be one or two hot dishes such as a daube of beef or a chicken stew before you select a few cheeses to help finish the red wine. Desserts are also laid out on a side table for your selection.
Wines are chosen from the well-stocked wine bar. We enjoyed a Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
And an added bonus is that La Cave is non-smoking.
