Auberge La Fontaine sits in the very centre of the picturesque perched village of Venasque. The apartment-style rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, making it a great place to base yourself while you explore the delights of the Vaucluse region.
However there is another reason for staying here - there is a serious restaurant with some very serious dishes turned out for guests and the locals who appreciate the culinary skills of chef Christian Soehlke.
His cooking respects French traditions and he also loves to use truffles when they are in season. We were fortunate enough to spend New Year's Eve at the Auberge and to take part in a special seven course truffle meal. The food was deeply satisfying with a salad of foie gras and mache scattered with diced truffles a particular highlight.
He also likes cooking with seafood and we were delighted to find telinas on the menu on a couple of the occasions that we have dined there. These tiny molluscs are presented simply but with one of the best broths we have tasted in years. We also marvelled at a dish of scallops presented ceviche-style - it was close to perfection!
We were also intrigued during our New Year's Eve meal to be offered a cheese that we hadn't tried before - the strong smelling, strong tasting (and very addictive) vieux Lille. For lovers of powerful cheese this is well-worth seeking out.
There is also a good selection of regional wines available as well. We particularly enjoyed the elegant Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf du Pape.
