Annie Smithers has set up a café cum restaurant in a pleasant building in the Piper St antique shop strip.

She is not aiming to compete with the top end of the market. You won't find anything stacked on the plate (a great relief). Rather you will find simple food cooked with expertise and integrity.

We tried beef that had been braised with bacon and mushrooms and served with a pilaf of rice. There was not a single discordant flavour. The beef melted in the mouth and the flavour of the sauce was rich, complex and comforting - and all this for $14.50!!!

Similarly another choice from the daily specials on the whiteboard was sausages and mash. Once again these were executed perfectly and were ultimately satisfying.

A small caramelised apple tart we tried for dessert should be held up as a template for others to try to emulate.

Don't expect haute cuisine or silver service - just expect what we are all searching for which is good food lovingly prepared.
