We had read a lot about this restaurant on our first visit to Chicago last year, so on our second visit we decided that we would try it if we couldn’t get in to Charlie Trotter's. As we only had a week's notice of our trip Charlie Trotter's was full, but we did manage to secure a reservation at Arun's.Often touted as the best Thai food in the country we were eager to see how Arun's stacked up against our favourite Thai restaurants in Sydney. The degustation menu offers many dishes. We started with a thickened crab soup. The flavour was good and it provided a pleasant (but not exciting) start to the meal. A dish of three finger foods to follow failed to inspire. Shrimp with eggs, some shitake mushrooms and fried shrimp balls with tofu were good without being memorable. On the other hand a small rice paper wrapping stuffed with pork, peanuts and tapioca was very good. But soon after we were served another similar dish which was stuffed with jicama and shrimps! A thin slice of foie gras with a shiny balsamic sauce looked stunning but the flavours were too muted to be of interest.A papaya salad presented in a ring of cucumber with a fried chicken wing was a very good combination of flavours and textures. A dish of lobster and scallops was very ordinary but a fried snapper in chilli sauce rescued the meal.Overall, the meal failed to inspire. It certainly did not have the authentic mixture of flavours that you get at David Thompson's restaurants or the fusion of east and west that you find at Tetsuya's. However if you are in Chicago and feel like Asian-inspired flavours then it is worth a visit.
