Just near the wonderful Maxwell Road Food Centre, this tea house is a great place to visit for a quiet half hour before launching into the hubbub of the nearby food centre where you will find some of the best Hainanese chicken in the world.
The only thing that puts us off in this quiet and relaxing tea house are the pictures on the wall of a foreign monarch and her consort who evidently tried the tea here once. Why people in such a vibrant city need to cling to these outmoded colonial relics is beyond us - but then again we live in Australia so why should we claim the high moral ground!
We tried the tea eggs which were much stronger than others that we have experienced. The ikan bilis were far too sweet for our taste. This was exacerbated by the incredibly sweet peanuts that were served as a free accompaniment. Because we are addicted to aged Pu Erh tea we ordered the 20 year old variety. It was not served with the same ceremony that we have experienced elsewhere but it did have a fully developed flavour and was quite enjoyable. The snacks that you can order to accompany the tea are also quite pleasant.
