When we are in Canberra and are looking for an alternative to our favourite up-market restaurant (Atlantic) we often turn to Mezzalira for a relaxed meal that provides very good food and some excellent wines.
You can choose to sit either outside or inside depending on the Canberra weather. Daily specials are chalked on a blackboard - there are usually about five.
At a recent meal we started with an excellent salad of grilled octopus served on a lovely rocket salad. The octopus displayed no hints of toughness - it was meltingly tender and full of flavour. We also tried a good dish of fettucine with long cooked duck.
They take their risotto seriously here. We tried a lemon risotto with parmigiana. It had been cooked to order and cooked perfectly. Our other main course was a whole snapper that had been wood roasted and then served in a delicious tomato broth.
A yoghurt pannacotta has slightly too much gelatine but the accompanying cinnamon syrup was superb.
The wine list here is very good. It is one of the few places where you can try Giaconda Chardonnay, for example.
