Shanghai is one of the most exciting cities on earth. You will probably arrive at the smart new airport ready to be swept into the vibrant city. You can catch the Maglev bullet train into the Pudong area which lies to the east of the defining Huangpu River or else a taxi direct to your hotel.
When you arrive in Pudong you will probably catch the efficient underground to a point closer to your hotel. We loved the underground railway system. It is fast, efficient and reliable.
Once you arrive, you can marvel at this go-ahead city with its skyscrapers stretching for kilometre after kilometre mingling with its rich architectural history stemming from the time when it was dominated by the British and the French during the so-called Opium Wars.
You will be drawn to the Bund with its graceful buildings lining the Huangpu River and housing elegant fashion salons and up-markets restaurants and to the tree-lined streets of the French Concession with its nineteenth century buildings where you will find every designer label from Europe and beyond.
Modern Xintiandi will be a magnet for you as you stroll past elegant shops, bars and cafes close to where Mao's wife once maintained her revolutionary base.
Across the river from the Bund you will find the Pudong area with its commercial buildings and five star hotels and iconic buildings such as the eye-catching Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
