French wines are generally well made and expressive of the terroir. There are hundreds of appellations throughout France so it takes a lifetime to get to know the wines. That is why it is worth taking the time to visit some of the better wine shops to seek out interesting examples from the lesser known appellations.

The white and red wines of the Loire Valley currently represent some of the best value for money. Look for white wines from Sancerre and reds from Bourgeuil. Further a field look for the emerging reds in the Cotes du Ventoux and Cotes du Luberon such as Domaine du Cascavel , Domaine du Murmurium, Domaine Fondreche, Domaine de la Citadelle and any of the wines from Tardieu-Laurent. The wines of South-West France should not be overlooked and the whites from Alsace are still good value.

Another tip is to seek out some of the special Vin du Pays wines that represent excellent value for money.

Noe L'Antiquaire Du Vin in the 7th is a quirky place with vintages of Chateau Y'quem dating back to 1946. The selection here is such that you can be certain of finding something interesting to buy.

La Dernière Goutte is a charming, small and quirky wine store just off rue de Baci. They have some interesting wines from Provence including Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol and Clos Ste Magdeleine Cassis. We have also seen the cult Chateau Simone in here.

Lavinia with their 6000 bottle selection have over a dozen trained sommeliers on hand to guide you selection. And for the really serious collector, arrange a visit into the cellars of Les Caves Taillevent where a mind blowing array of fine wines is available.
