The array of food shops in Paris is stunning. There are the famous large food emporia such as Fauchon and Hediard but we tend to by-pass these in search of the smaller, more focussed outlets.

Every trip sees us heading to rue Bonaparte in the 6th to sample the stunning patisserie in the jewel-box store of Pierre Herme. His macaroons are one of the cult foods of the world! We then head to rue de Seine to drop into another of our must-visit places, Da Rosa where we buy some of the best Jamon de Bellota that you will find anywhere. Also in the area is the fabulous Poilane bakery where locals queue for large loaves of rustic, wood-fired sourdough bread.  Cross the road to peruse the fine teas at Le Palais des Thés. Bread and Roses in the lovely rue Madame in the 6th is one of the hottest bakeries in Paris at the moment, and of course the Eric Kayser outlets are a must.

And then it is off to the other side of the river to buy cheese at Alléosse in the 17th where many of France’s finest cheeses are aged in the underground cellars before being placed on display. The finest restaurants in Paris source their cheese selections here. More fine cheese can be found at Marie-Anne Cantin and Barthelemy in the 7th.

After all this activity you might like to cool down with an ice cream. For this you head to the  Île Saint-Louis and the venerable institution Berthillon. Here the ice creams contain no artificial flavourings and no chemical stabilisers. Another place to check out is Amorino which has outlets popping up throughout the city.

And of course, no visit is complete without dropping by the magical outlet of Jean-Paul Hevin in rue St Honore. He is one of the best chocolatiers in France.

If you want to relax over a cup of tea there is no better place than Mariage Freres, although we also like La Maison des Trois Thes on the rue du Bourg Tilbourg in the Marais.

The markets of Paris vary in quality but the Raspail Organic Vegetable Market for organic produce is worth a visit and Market President Wilson is a good Saturday morning market. Make sure you check out the amazing vegetable stall of Joel Thiebault which sells the best produce in the market.
